The word comes from a long-running British science fiction show called “Doctor Who,” about a time-traveling alien whose time machine/spaceship (called the TARDIS) looks like a British police box–one that is infinitely large on the inside (which I thought made it a cool metaphor for a website). In 2002 the show had been off the air for years, and at the time I registered the domain I had no idea it would finally return only 3 years later! Back then I just thought I was being clever and quirky, which, as far as I was concerned, was entirely on-brand for the show I was referencing!
